Records chronicle Workman's career from his days as a reporter at the News & Courier (Charleston, S.C.) to his term as the editor of The State (Columbia, S.C.). Files document effortto produce three special historical editions of The State commemorating South Carolina's Tricentennial, the U.S. Bicentennial, and the Centennial of the burning of Columbia during the Civil War; special edition, 1978, surveying South Carolina state government titled The South Carolina Digest: A Government Survey. Includes original and revised versions of manuscriptfor "The Case for the South"; correspondence with the publisher; and reaction letters from readers across the country; newspaper coverage, including book reviews, appear in both Journalism Records Series and in Clippings Files Series.
